BAM!!!

Sometimes cutting back on portions and making better choices is boring. To me, food needs a little bit of BAM! Something that leaves me satisfied yet wanting more.

001

Take these chipotle sweet fries from Alexia. 170 calories per serving. Decent, but not enough for a meal.

002

BAM! Turkey chili, sharp cheddar cheese and light sour cream to the rescue. These additions only add 300 calories, protein and more deliciousness. Perfect lunch.

003

Take this boring lump of pizza dough. (Ok it's not boring at all. I bought this premade at Trader Joe's since the whole wheat dough was out.)

004

Throw on some pesto, spinach, artichokes and buffalo chicken meatballs. ANNNNDDDDDD BA (wait for it....)M!!

005

Topped with a combo of sharp cheddar and pepper jack. I had a tough time portioning out 2 slices.

I seriously kept telling myself, "Leftovers tomorrow, leftovers tomorrow."

How do you add some bam to your food?
How do you keep your portion sizes down?

That pizza is making me bite my knuckle.

As for your BAM! question, I just ask myself "how can I make this dish more nutritious AND tasty?" From there, I'll start adding what I feel is an appropriate mix of veggies, seasonings, cheeses, meats, etc.

As for portions, we use a food scale the majority of the time to measure things like meat, pasta and potatoes and make sure we don't overdue individual servings.

But one thing that kind of dawned on me as I read your question on portions (especially with dishes that have multiple ingredients) is to try dishing out a single serving and then reduce it by half. That way, if you're not super hungry, you'll be satisfied with less (and have leftovers!) or, if you're still hungry after the first half, you can go back and finish the rest without overdoing it. And you don't even have to do it exactly that way- the main thing is to just slow down, become more aware of your hunger cues and not worry so much about the portion on your plate... It's tricky (and something I'm still working on), but on the times I've managed to do it successfully, I've felt nice 'n' satisfied, but not stuffed and miserable.

i always make myself some fruit or veggies... and before i can have more of delicious fatty things i have to eat that. if i am still wanting more AFTER the apple or the salad or whatevs i figure it's ok... but generally the fruit/veggies will fill me up.

i do it to josh too, which makes me feel like a mom sometimes. "no more pizza till you eat your salad!"

These look awesome! I love the Alexia fries, but agree that they need a little BAM! I usually dip them in ketchup mixed with siricha (sp?) or Tabasco...

i try to make good portion decisions but sometimes, if its good, like really good, i just eat till im content... the question is "what is CONTENT?" LOL

Yum!!! Yeah sometimes portion sizes can be a bit of a hastle so-to-speak. But for me, I usually just make enough that i know I'll eat. As far as jazzing up a dish...i guess that depends on what it is. :) Usually they would involve ketchup or cheese or butter. hahaha....

Ha - loved this post! I, of course, BAM up my meals with Tabasco!

But I am realizing is that sometimes only a bit more salt wakes up a dish!

I do okay with portion sizes for meals, its bags of tortilla chips or pretzels that can be my downfall - I try to portion them out into ziploc baggies - otherwise I mindlessly eat until the big bag is full!

That pizza sounds delish! As far as controlling portions, I don't really try to do that. But one thing that helps is always adding a huge supply of veggies to my meal. That way, I get some extra bulk in there.

Love the BAM post- your tweet cracked me up!

I make things obnoxiously spicy, add high water content foods like cucumbers, eat out of my bowls that have measurements already marked in them so that I know if I'm having 1 or 3 cups of the good stuff :)

I've been meaning to try that pizza dough from Trader Joes.
They have some sweet potato fries that are too good. I'll have to remember to top them with some chili next time. yum
